Screen-Reader & Manual Accessibility Checklist

Use this checklist quarterly (or before any major content change) to manually verify the site against WCAG 2.1 AA. Print it or work through it on-screen. Any failed item should be logged and triaged through the Accessibility Help Desk.

How to run the audit

  1. macOS / iOS: enable VoiceOver — Cmd + F5 (Mac) or triple-click side button (iPhone).
  2. Windows: install NVDA (free) from nvaccess.org and start it.
  3. Android: Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack.
  4. Navigate the site with keyboard only — Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, arrow keys.

1. Keyboard navigation

  • The "Skip to main content" link appears on first Tab and works.
  • Every interactive element is reachable with Tab in a logical order.
  • Focus indicator is clearly visible on every focusable element.
  • No keyboard trap — I can Tab out of every widget, modal, and form.
  • The accessibility toolbar can be opened, used, and closed with keyboard only.
  • The BOOK and CALL buttons activate with Enter.

2. Screen reader (VoiceOver / NVDA)

  • Page title is announced correctly on load.
  • Landmarks are announced: banner (header), navigation, main, contentinfo (footer).
  • Headings read in logical order — one h1 per page, no skipped levels.
  • All meaningful images have descriptive alt text; decorative images are silent.
  • Icon-only buttons (book, call, accessibility toolbar, close) announce a clear name.
  • Form fields announce their label, required state, and any error message.
  • Links announce their purpose out of context (no "click here").

3. Zoom & reflow

  • At 200% browser zoom, no content is lost and no horizontal scroll appears.
  • The accessibility toolbar text-resize (up to 200%) does not break layout.
  • Content reflows on a 320px-wide viewport (iPhone SE).

4. Color & contrast

  • All body text meets 4.5:1 contrast against its background.
  • Large text (18pt+) and UI components meet 3:1 contrast.
  • Information is not conveyed by color alone (errors also use text/icon).
  • High-contrast and negative modes in the toolbar remain readable.

5. Forms

  • Every input has a visible label associated via for/id.
  • Required fields are marked in both text and aria-required.
  • Validation errors are announced by the screen reader and visually shown.
  • Success messages are announced (aria-live region).

6. Motion & media

  • Enabling "Pause motion" in the toolbar stops all animations/transitions.
  • The site respects the OS "prefers-reduced-motion" setting.
  • Any video has captions; any audio has a transcript.

7. Third-party widgets

  • Boulevard booking overlay opens, closes, and traps focus appropriately — or, if not, phone/email alternatives are prominently offered.
  • Instagram embed has a text alternative.
